Losing a fur child is tough, especially one that we share a special bond with.
Horses are magnificent animals that embody peace and freedom. The bond people form with them is unbreakable and truly a gift. Shannen Doherty, actress, animal lover and proud mom to several horses, was left heartbroken after suddenly losing her beloved horse Picasso.
She took to Instagram to share the sad news and wrote, “Picasso. I guess you’re not supposed to have favorites but he was in fact my favorite. I fell in love with him out at a barn where my other horses were. He was for sale but serious professional riders were looking at him to be their Grand Prix horse. When they were done testing him, I would give him a bath, walk him, feed him carrots and apples and talk to him. We were bonded.”
The post went on to say, “I was told to not buy him. He was too strong, hard to handle, needed a male rider etc. I bought him anyway cause I didn’t like how the people who were looking to buy him treated him. He became mine and I became his.”
Their connection was undeniable and something few experience. “He was gentle with me. Took me over jumps perfectly. I trusted him completely and he trusted me. I was in love. That love has never wavered. I turned him out to pasture many years ago.I wanted him to be a horse. To run free. To hang out with other horses. To just be a horse. I saw him often. Our love was still intact.”
His death was sudden and she was not able to be by his side. “Today, he suffered a ruptured intestine. No surgery possible. No way to save him. He died 20 minutes before I could even get to him. My heart is shattered. #picasso August 12-2019.”
Doherty’s mother posted, “Picasso would stand in his stall with his head either in the corner or just staring out his window until……….. one day he heard a voice in the barn and he came to the door of his stall, put his head over the door and shook his head up and down until the voice he heard came walking by his stall and a loving hand reached out to him and the beautiful voice that he’d heard at the other end of the barn was now standing in front of him pouring out beautiful words that made his ears go up, his head nod and a slurpy kiss for this beautiful girl with her beautiful voice was hers his to give and hers to accept.
It was a perfect pairing and the relationship between this beautiful girl and this beautiful horse created a bond of love that they both enjoyed for years to come. His latter years were spent roaming the pastures with other horses because the girl’s love for him allowed her to give him the freedom that she felt he deserved.”
We are so sorry for your loss.
